The European Union authorizes the use of chemicals in food production. For this reason, during the year, we eat about 2 kg of synthetic additives. For their verification are responsible standard institutions.

The use of chemicals in food production is common. The EU currently allows about 2 thousand of so called enhancers - dyes, thickeners, measures to improve the taste and smell and those prolonging durability of products, marked with E. Officially, all chemicals are safe for human health.

But this theory only. Doctors and scientists have often different opinion on this issue. An example here is aspartame (E951). Widely used sweetener, which is, among others, added in beverages, chewing gum or mints. It is also used for the production of canned food and packaged in foil meats. Meanwhile, Italian researchers have found that its intake is associated with the occurrence of leukemia and other cancers, such as the lymph nodes. In addition, aspartame and other sweeteners are supposed to be “favorable” alternative to sugar. It is a fact that they are less caloric, but are much sweeter than sugar. So they are processed into energy that your body needs.

Enhancing substances not only improve the taste, but also the color of the food. If not for them, the food would not look so appetizing, but it certainly would be healthier. Where does the certainty come from? On the list of chemicals approved by the EU is located, among others E124, which is a substance called the cochineal red. True, it colors food beautifully in red or pink, but not without reason it has been banned in the United States and some Scandinavian countries – it leads to hyperactivity, especially in children. E124 is not the only questionable dye. On the list also appear E120 subtracted from dried aphids and packed into yogurt or causing allergies and insomnia E180, used for cheese production.

Currently, not much food is free from preservatives. They are to ensure freshness of long products, to prevent mold or fungi. They fulfill its function, however, by the way they are poorly tolerated by the human body. E202 causes allergy , E239 is ideal for removing rust, E250 may be carcinogenic.

It’s not the end of bad news. Thickeners are responsible for the stomach problems - diarrhea, bloating and severe pain. They are also not too friendly to the kidneys and liver, especially E476 contained in creams and spreads.
